World Superbike new boy, Marco Melandri proved he is a fast study after taking his maiden victory in the opening race of Round 2 of the World Superbike Championship at the revised Donington Park circuit. He followed that performance up with a second in race 2 behind points leader Althea Ducati’s Carlos Checa.

The shock withdrawal of the Ducati factory team for the 2011 season was seemingly no impediment on the opening day of the final World Superbike test at Phillip Island immediately ahead of this weekend’s season opener. Ducati riders posted the top 3 times with fan favorite Carlos Checa in front.

Factory withdrawal or no, Ducati still featured at the top of the time charts at the end of the first day of official testing for the World Superbike Championship yesterday in Portimao, Portgual. Well known fast lap specialist, Jacob Smrz took the honors with Althea Ducati’s, Carlos Checa in 5th.
