Turning Japanese Turns Ducati Panigale Ugly

Talk about Lost in Translation.  Ducati has had to make rather radical and hideous aesthetic changes to their all new Ducati 1199 Panigale in order to get the model approved for sale in Japan.  Turns out that its too loud and now it hurt my eyes!

To hush the Panigale up, Ducati chose to fit a long single silencer that looks like a kit part of a Honda RC45 and is kind of loud all by itself.  To go along with this choice comes a different clutch cover.  Apart from being an eyesore the changes add some 4kg (~8lb) to the dry weight.

Yeah.  We’re going to go ahead and give this one a miss.  Culturally the Japanese apologise more than Westerners.  It seems in this case it should be the Italians who say sorry.

  1. Give the Italians some credit. They probably did it that way so it is bolt on and reversal by the owner. Blame Japan for regs that discriminate against loud sexy bikes… :)

I had to look at the calendar,as I thought it was April 1st…

  3. LOL! Remember the 916 introduction in Australia in 1994? The wouldn’t allow the assymetrical low-beam / high-beam so the importer had to cut the nose and insert a nasty square headlight up front. I remember going to the bike show in Sydney and I almost broke out into tears… Merde… Our Noise laws were bypassed in the USA by smart Italian engineers for my 900SS. A 2 or 3 tooth smaller rear sprocket. Much better than wrecking the overall design of the bike.

  4. Yes Derek, check out this story in the ugly Aussie 916 http://www.ducatinewstoday.com/2012/04/the-ugliest-ducati-916-in-the-world/

  5. Mark, thanks for the link. Square headlight is a hate crime on a 916 but oddly perfect for 750 sport, 851/888 and 900 SS… :)
