At the same time as Valentino Rossi was testing engine changes designed to smooth out his Ducati GP12 at Mugello, 3 time World Superbike Champion Troy Bayliss was continuing his part of the development of the Ducati 1199 Panigale World Superbike racer that is expected to debut in the series next year.
Posting on his Twitter feed, Troy indicated that the Superbike spec Ducati 1199 has a good feeling in the wet like its MotoGP cousin but unlike the prototype racer it was plenty fast in the dry too. Once it dried up Bayliss spent time testing the new 17″ Pirelli spec tires that will be introduced in 2013.
Since there isn’t a round of the World Superbike Championship held at Mugello it is hard to compare times. Troy managed a 1:52.3 lap on race tires which is 1.2 seconds slower than the best time set by Max Biaggi in a 2011 test at the newly resurfaced track. Alex Hofmann testing the Aprilia RSV4 Superbike at the same time as Troy Bayliss claimed a best time of 1:51.8. At a test of the Ducati 1199 last year at Mugello, Troy did a best lap of 1:51.3.
