Checa to Help Rossi with Ducati GP12 Development
Fresh from his 2 victories at Magny Cours where he captured the World Superbike Crown, Althea Ducati’s Carlos Checa has gotten the call to help the factory develop the 2012 version of the Ducati Desmosedici GP12.
The opportunity is more about the limit to the amount of testing that Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden can do than any real expectation of super speed from the new World Superbike Champion. Contracted MotoGP riders can only conduct 8 days of testing and development of the new 1,000cc spec machine and Ducati has already used 7 of them.
Although Troy Bayliss has ridden the Desmosedici before his riding style is so distinctive such that his feedback isn’t seen as translatable as other riders. Checa, on the other hand, should be able to give good feedback at a pace beyond the level of test riders but still a notch or two behind Rossi and Hayden.
Checa last appeared in MotoGP rider in 2010 when he rode the Pramac Ducati, substituting for Mika Kallio at Estoril and Valencia. He retired with arm pump in the first race and finished 15th and last at Valencia.
