Asphalt & Rubber is citing credible sources that say Ducati will launch two Streetfighter models in September. The first will see the aging 1098 powerplant dropped in favor of the testastretta 11º engine that now powers the Multistrada 1200 and the Diavel.
With the Streetfighter 1198, Ducati are acting to streamline their 4-valve engine range now that the full power 1198 engine is set to be retired in favor of the Superquadrata powerplant that will be fitted to the new 2012 Ducati 1199 Superbike that will be shown publicly for the first time this November at the EICMA show in Milan.
In addition, Ducati will introduce an 848 version of the Streetfighter which will, spiritually at least, be a replacement for the Monster S4RS. This smaller version will appeal to Ducati switchers and will have an attractive price point in the marketplace presumably somewhat less than the Ducati 848EVO Dark which has an MSRP of $12,995 in the USA. We’d bet on $12,495.
Frankly we are surprised it has taken this long as the launch of the Aprilia Tuono V4 has somewhat stolen the Streetfighter’s thunder (pun intended). In October last year we predicted that both models might lob at the November EICMA show.
Since the launch of the Multistrada 1200 there are now 3 different testastretta powerplants which is one too many. Ignore the fact that the testastretta 11º would probably make an ideal powerplant for the Streetfighter, the fighter in the name and the expected launch of the Aprilia Tuono V4 means that Ducati News Today would place money on the Streetfighter getting a 10bhp boost from the 1198 engine being slotted in for 2011. The use of the more powerful 1198 engine in the Streetfighter also clears the way for the 848EVO engine to be slotted in to create the Streetfighter 848. Taking the relativity of current 1198 and Streetfighter pricing this would suggest an MSRP of $12,500 for a bike that would represent the modern equivalent of my own Monster S4RS.
Oh well, better late than never.
