AMA has Ducati 848EVO Pile on the Pounds

ibeatanorexia thumb AMA has Ducati 848EVO Pile on the PoundsAfter just two rounds of the 2011 AMA Pro Racing Championship, officials have acted to penalize the Ducati 848EVO in the Daytona Sportbike and Supersport classes by changing the minimum weight limits.

The minimum weight difference between the twins (meaning the Ducati 848) and the multis (meaning the Japanese 600′s) has been increased from 20 to 30lb with the twins going up 5 and the 4′s coming down by the same amount effective immediately.

The Daytona Sportbike class is designed to bring together vastly different motorcycles for exciting close racing by massaging the rules – Remember Chaz Davies on the Aprilia RSV100R and of course Danny Eslick on the 5 liter Buell icon smile AMA has Ducati 848EVO Pile on the Pounds . So the change seems aimed at restoring parity after Jason DiSalvo has won all of the 3 races run so far over the two rounds. Admittedly he had a healthy dose of good fortune at Daytona after a mandatory tire stop allowed for an engine change but he clearly dominated at Infineon.

The rule changes also apply to the lower specification Supersport class where paradoxically Ducati has not scored particularly well.  It remains to be seen whether 10lbs can stop DiSalvo running away with the title, even after his first non win of the season at Miller Motorsports Park (PJ Jacobsen finished 2nd).
