Ducati Product Placement Pays Off
Hot on the heels of bringing you the news that Ducati was voted second only to Apple as the most memorable product placement of 2010 we bring you some evidence from our own logs of what happens when a brand resonates with consumers.
Way back in March 2010 we ran a story noting that the Ducati Sportclassic was to star in one of the most anticipated movies of the year, Tron Legacy. Like most of the posts we make on Ducati product placement it generated modest traffic for awhile and faded away the background.
Nine months later I was vacationing in New Zealand and noticed that traffic was spiking on this old story. It didn’t take long to work out why, the movie had finally premiered on December 17th and thousands of people were now searching for ‘Ducati tron’ and the like. Our traffic exploded going up by a factor of 50 literally overnight as you can see in the chart.
Our experience confirms Ducati claims that the movie was a home run with a representative saying:-
After the film, Tweets such as “I’m getting a Ducati now” and “Ducati in Tron awweesooome” were standard. A Ducati rep told us it was an “absolute win” and that “The amount of feedback we’ve gotten from that film was incredible, easily the most in recent memory.”
Interestingly the post is getting a second wind in March with traffic spiking again (not shown). The irony? The Ducati star of the show was the Sportclassic 1000 and Ducati quietly discontinued the range last year.

the phone literally rang off the hook for about a month after the movie was released. Too bad you couldn’t find a new Ducati Sport unsold across the US!
Wish they had released the movie a bit sooner. Those two black sport 1000′s used in the movie were passed over to the studio in Vancouver through Ducati Seattle about 2.5 – 3 years ago.. If Ducati had known it was going to take that long to release the movie they most likely would have suggested a different model.
