Wayne Gardner Reckons Burgess will Follow Rossi

Wayne Gardner 1989 Japanese GP 500GP thumb Wayne Gardner Reckons Burgess will Follow Rossi1987 500cc GP World Champion, Wayne Gardner, has weighed in on the debate as to whether star crew chief and fellow Aussie, Jeremy Burgess, will in fact end up at Ducati with Valentino Rossi.

Gardner believes that Burgess will stay true to the comment he made in the past, that he would stick with Rossi until the Italian retired from motorcycle racing. Garner’s thesis is that Burgess is just being strategic in not making an announcement since doing so would remove him from access to the Yamaha development program. Wayne argues that it is in his best interests to delay any announcement as long as possible.

“I think it’s odds-on that he’ll end up at Ducati. He’s not saying anything at the moment, but he’s pretty cagey. He once told me he’d stick with Rossi until the end of Vale’s career. I still believe that …. If he did announce he was leaving, he’d be immediately locked out of the Yamaha development loop … I’d bet that behind the scenes he’s already agreed to go.”

Rossi’s first ride in red could come at the end of season test at Valencia if Yamaha release him from his contract.
