The Day King Carl’s Coronation Began

8881 thumb2 The Day King Carls Coronation BeganCarl Fogarty or King Carl to his adoring fans is a Ducati legend winning all his 4 World Superbike titles on a Ducati. He raced three quarters of a season in 1991 on a Honda Britain RC30 regularly finishing in the top 10 but couldn’t secure a good ride for 1992. Short of money and thinking of selling his family financed Ducati 888 Corsa, Foggy lined up for the second round of the World Superbike round at Donington Park.

Carl had finished 12th and 10th in the first round of the series at Albacete, Spain but at Donington his home advantage needed to offset a tired privateer, customer Ducati 888 Corsa racer that was up against mighty factory machinery. Despite his lack of budget and sporting worn but lurid pink and white leathers the local boy took pole position and looked like taking a maiden win in the first race before he fell while leading and couldn’t rejoin the race.

He didn’t make the same mistake twice. In the second race he started slowly but made his way inexorably to the front to take a fantastic win for the young privateer Englishman on customer machinery. As the commentator put it

The man with no visible budget whatsoever wins Race 2 in front of his home crowd!!

The legend of Foggy had begun and the following year, he replaced Raymond Roche in the factory Ducati team taking 11 wins that year but finishing behind Scott Russell on the Kawasaki in the title chase. He was victorious in 1994 and won the title again in ’95 and ’98 and ’99.
