Official MotoGP App Pricey but Feature Packed
If you are as obsessed with motorcycle racing as I am then you religiously watch every MotoGP race. If you also always tend to have an Apple device with you at all times then like me you will probably be interested in the Official MotoGP 2010 Live Timing app which is universal for the Apple iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
The number one draw card of the application is the GPS tagging of the bikes on track as they go through practice, qualifying and racing. This means you can see the whole field at a glance, see where they are on track and even zoom in and follow a rider you are particularly interested in. In addition the application provides realtime data updates so you can keep track of the same information as the teams get including track sector splits, whose on a hot lap, rider gaps etc… In addition there is calendar, team and rider information along with the ubiquitous grid girls photos and commentary, news and video content from MotoGP.com packaged in an Apple friendly H.264 video codec format.
For the review I downloaded the app on my iPad with the intention of having the app as a companion whilst I watched the Brno MotoGP race from an Apple Mac Mini running the paid MotoGP.com feed on my 50″ Pioneer plasma TV.
Firstly I was able to download and re-play the MotoGP morning warm-up while I had breakfast watching the leader board change during the 20 minute session. For the race itself I started the coverage at the same time the race began live on my video feed and was able to follow the progress of the entire race on the device. After Rossi’s poor start, I touched his name to see how he was progressing on the track whilst the commentators followed Lorenzo and Pedrosa out up front. I could also watch the segment times and realize before the commentators did that Spies was fading.
The application allows for live coverage of all race sessions for all 3 classes and also allows the download of all previous races this season so you can watch the racing when it suits you. For downloaded races you can skip forward and back in the timeline.
Watching the race on the device is no substitute for a real video feed but it certainly makes for a valuable companion whilst watching the race and can keep you up to date if you simply can’t watch for some reason. When I purchased it you needed to be a hardcore fan with the outrageous $18.99 pricing but the price of the MotoGP 2010 Official Live Timing has recently been reduced to a still pricey but more realistic $11.99 in the US store.
One caveat. It is not clear if the app is a one time payment and will be updated for subsequent seasons or whether it will be a requirement to buy a new app each year (I hope not).
