Big Bore Ducati Streetfighter Wheelies in 4th

Ducati Streetfighter 1262 Special 2 thumb Big Bore Ducati Streetfighter Wheelies in 4thThe Ducati Streetfighter is the only current model in the range to use the 1,099cc L-twin as the rest of the 4-valve Ducatis now use a variant of the larger 1198 twin. So what to do if you have a track record of building Ducati specials and want more power and importantly streetable torque? How about take out the motor to 1,262cc.

Ducati Streetfighter 1262 Special 8 thumb Big Bore Ducati Streetfighter Wheelies in 4thLast year we brought you the trick customized Ducati Streetfighter built by Shift-Tech in colloboration with Moto Corse Performance. This time the objective has been great big gobs of liquid torque. The kind that lifts the front wheel in 4th gear. To get that you can’t beat cubic inches so the engine has been taken out to 1,262cc. That led to the first problem. There is no big bore kit for this bike.

A custom job was required. The engine features the stock 1098 cases bored to fit 1198 cylinders with HQ pistons and stroker crankshaft to get to 1,262cc. the heads are ported with reshaped cams. Since the cylinders are sitting now ~3mm higher then before, this means lots of little things had to be charged.  Luckily engine builder Hudlett Racing was well up to the task.

The standard cam belts were now too short, so custom belts had to be made. Corsa keys for the cam wheels had to be ordered to get the cam timing right. Longer Oil fittings that come out of the cases and go into the base of the cylinder had to be made. The throttle body plates had to be modified since they sit further apart now due to cylinder height. You get the idea, not an easy job or a “major nightmare, not something I would want to do again” as Guido of Shift-Tech described it. The engine was finished off with a Microtec ECU and a full Zard titanium exhaust.

And all this at the wheel! Oh and 176bhp is nice too, but it is the torque that must make this thing feel invincible on the road.

This bike carries on the Shift-Tech tradition of being draped in high quality components, tastily arrayed. Check out the carbon fiber bodywork and wheels, the Welds on the Zard exhaust and the formidable Ohlins and Brembo front end. You can’t see all the titanium bolts and fasteners but I’m sure you can imagine the 318lbs wet weight.

Shift-Tech seems to actually do the things to Ducatis that most of us only dream of. Long may they continue.

  1. This is yet another example of how Vendors build some of the best bikes.

In comparison a Bike mag would rarely have a definitive plan going into a “Project Bike” build. They just tend to say yes to whatever their sponsors decide to throw at them and procede to bolt said free parts onto the bike and then call it “Kustom” (spelt with a ‘K’ for street cred).

Its good to see companies out there prepared to take things beyond, obviously being in the industry makes obtaining some of the more custom pieces easier than average joe but who cares.

I can’t imagine the multitude of little things that had to be catered for on this build and tip my hat to Shiftech for building a bitchin’ bike worthy of the title “street fighter”.
