Tom Cruise on a Ducati or is He?

Knight Day Ducati 1 thumb Tom Cruise on a Ducati or is He?Ducati seems to be in just about every movie these days, and we know Tom Cruise is a Ducati fan so what’s the big deal? Cruise and the Ducati Hypermotard feature in the recently released Knight and Day but take a close look at the photo above and you’ll notice it isn’t really a Ducati at all!

Aprilia SXV thumb Tom Cruise on a Ducati or is He?The double sided swingarm and wavy disc rotors give it away, the bike is in fact an Aprilia SXV550 disguised as a Ducati. Why pray tell? Let’s ask Gregg Smrz (any relation to Jacob?) the stunt coordinator for the movie.

“The Aprilia mock up was used in the Knight and Day movie for the motorcycle jump through the archway. The jump was 100 feet long and 8 feet high. Sorry guys, but nobody is jumping the Hypermotard that far. And it was not CG. The stunt double for Tom did the jump, and he used the same dummy as the one seen in the photo everybody is making such a big deal about. A lot of work went into disguising the motorcycle, so props to whoever caught it. The swing arm is the giveaway. The motorcycle pictured is 40% lighter than a Hypermotard with a human on the back, which makes the jump possible. The wheels were bent upon landing from the impact as expected, and that is why we used tubes in the tires.”

In other scenes in the movie an actual Hyper was the bike that was used. In another twist, Cruise did a jump on the Aprilia Hypermotard for an ESPN shoot with a dummy of co-star Cameron Diaz on the back (look once again at the opening photo).
