82 Year Old Takes TT Win on Ducati 250
Ted Fenwick, took victory in the opening race of TT 2010 at the Isle of Man. That he was on a Ducati was one thing that got our attention, the other was that he is 82 years old!! The grandfather should ought to be handy on two wheels since he has been racing for almost 60 years.
Riding his 1964 Ducati 250 single, Fenwick averaged 69mph as he beat riders a quarter of his age in the Pre-TT classic race that takes place on the Bilown circuit in the south of the island. The pensioner from York led from the flag and is an inspiration.
Ted first rode this very Ducati 28 years ago and has finished second in the island race twice before but this was his first victory. Like most racers he has stories to tell and scars to remind him of his adrenaline fueled career.
“A lot of the people I race against are much younger and probably more fearless, but it doesn’t really matter, although when I started racing I never thought I would still be doing it now. “I’ve been in hospital with things like a fractured pelvis and I broke my neck, arm and back in 1968, but I haven’t had a serious injury since 1972 and I’ll keep racing as long as I keep getting up in the morning.”

Ted doesn’t look 82 and generously attributes his success to friend and mechanic Geoff Shaw. His wife remains supportive but wouldn’t be upset if he stopped racing.
“…while I wouldn’t say I’ve got better with age, I’ve definitely become more careful.”
Careful maybe, but still fast enough to win!
