What if Ducati Produced a Sports Car?

pd29978 thumb What if Ducati Produced a Sports Car?It may not be as absurd as it first sounds. Afterall, KTM makes the X-Bow, so why not a lightweight sports car powered by a V8 based on two Ducati Desmosedici RR engines!! Young designer Anthony Collard imagined this hardcore 2-seater in a recent automotive design competition.

The project is a small sportscar using motorycle parts and offering high standard performance to give the driver and it’s passenger sensations as similar as possible to the ones of riding a Superbike. Anthony chose Ducati for its high quality and refinement, high performance and top of the range style, although Ducati were in no way involved in the design study (more’s the pity).

“The car has a mixed tubular/carbon body structure, covered by carbon panels and painted fairings. … it has Ohlins suspension on the four wheels….The engine is a in central front position (just behind the front wheel axis, like for example on a SLR McLaren), and it is a V8 made of two L4 Desmosedici engines. So it develops about 420hp for a car weighting 420-450kg, thanks to all the carbon elements. The wheels are, as on any Italian bike, Marchesinis.”

pd1 thumb What if Ducati Produced a Sports Car?The car is a Spyder which can be converted into a Coupe thanks to a removable polycarbonate roof. It is a two seater, with bucket seats integrated in the bodywork, motorbike sequential gearbox (1st gear up, others down), and the seats are molded around the transmission tunnel, as is the seat of a bike around the tank.

I can almost imagine what a V8 Desmotrentadue (32 valves of course!) would sound like and with a power to weight ratio of around 1bhp for each kg, it would accelerate like an open class sports bike but with an even more impressive shriek. You can see some more of Anthony’s work here.
