Hayden Finally Beats Stoner Fair and Square

n509268 hayden 18 thumb.slideshow11 Hayden Finally Beats Stoner Fair and SquareMarlboro Ducati’s Nicky Hayden became the first team-mate to defeat Australian sensation and 2007 MotoGP World Champion, Casey Stoner, since his championship victory season. Casey had seemed to be the only rider able to master the mercurial Ducati Desmosedici but changes for the 2010 season has seen the machine easier to ride for other Ducati mounted racers.

Despite the result, Hayden wasn’t too pleased to be further behind the leaders than he was in Qatar showing how much higher his expectations are of himself this season.

“Fourth place is no disaster but I was hoping to stay closer to the top three towards the end and put up a bit of a fight,” confirmed the Ducati Marlboro rider. “I’m not happy to be nine seconds adrift but we’re trying to build something here and we’ve had another solid weekend. The team, the bike, everything has been great this weekend but we just fell a couple of tenths short on race day. To be honest I thought we might find a little extra for the race, like we did in Qatar, but it wasn’t to be.”

Stoner finished in 5th and is now lying 8th in standings thanks to his DNF at Qatar where he crashed out of the lead. Hayden meanwhile is 5th whilst Jorge Lorenzo leads by 4 points from Valentino Rossi.

Prior to Jerez, Stoner’s last defeat at the hands of a team-mate was when Loris Capirossi won the 2007 Japanese Grand Prix, where Stoner finished a safe sixth to clinch the world championship.
