ducati flat track thumb Classic Roundcase Ducati Flat TrackerThis round case bevel drive flat tracker was displayed at a 1970′s motorcycle show by Berliner, the official US Ducati importer at the time. The bike was campaigned in the late 1970′s GNC Dirt Track circuit by Kenny McDonald and Steve Freeman.

Freeman Ducati thumb Classic Roundcase Ducati Flat TrackerThe bike carries the 68 plate that Freeman raced with. The photo above shows him in action in the 1980 Harrington GNC. Back then it was Ducati against the Harleys and even today there are some Ducati flat trackers in action with Larry Pegram campaigning a Sport Classic powered machine and Kurt Marmor with his outrageous 749 powered machine!! Just weeks ago, Ducati celebrated its first ever Grand National Flat Track victory in Saturday’s Yavapai Downs Mile when Joe Kopp took his Ducati Hypermotard powered flat tracker to victory.

    Neat photo from 1980 of Steve Freeman on the Ducati dirt tracker. I hadn’t seen that one before. I’m the current custodian of the bike. I consider the builder, Eddie Wilbanks to be the official owner. It’s still in the condition it was in when displayed at Vintage Motorcycle Days at Mid-Ohio a couple years ago. After having waffled back and forth the last few years on whether to restore it or leave it as it left the track in 1980, I’ve decided to go ahead with it. I’ll be doing a complete mechanical and cosmetic restoration and the paint will be done to replicate it’s last version (red and silver). I’ll use the first generation exhaust, as seen in the top picture when the bike was black and silver, even though it made better power with the later 2-into-1 system with the huge collector.
