It’s Official: Ducati is the Sound of Music

Screen shot 2010 04 23 at 9 thumb.57.32 AM Its Official: Ducati is the Sound of MusicFor motorcycle fans, the engine is the most important part of their machine. It defines so many aspects of the ride for the power delivery, the type and quality of the vibrations and of course the sound. Harley tried to patent (unsuccessfully) its potato-potato sound but for the new Ducati Multistrada 1200 the company researched the harmonics of violins to get the new Testastretta 11º engine to sound just right. Hear for yourself after the jump.

Superbike Magazine recently spoke to Ducatis technical director, Andrea Forni, who discussed the new Multistrada 1200 which is achieving acclaim all over the world. There are so many new facets to the model Ducati are calling 4 bikes in 1 (Sport, Touring, Enduro and Urban) it was perhaps surprising what Forni was most proud of. It wasn’t the switchable electronic suspension, the traction control or ABS it was the exhaust!

“Maybe the exhaust system. We spent a lot of time on getting the sound right. We also worked with a firm of consultants who use special software used for sound design, to model shapes of silencers. I researched the harmonics of violins and other instruments for the first time and it turns out that the most pleasing sounds for people to hear are low-frequency notes. We are lucky because Ducati engines have always made lots of sounds like this”

Perhaps this will be introduced as part of the expected monocoque framed, short stroke model.  In the meantime, you can hear the Ducati Multistrada 1200 sound for yourself in the video below.
