Following disappointing sales of the Monster 1100, Ducati is expected to announce a Monster 796 model to slot in between the big boy 1100 and the entry level 696. The new Monster 696 will use the same engine as the Hypermotard 796. As befitting its middle of the road status the new model will keep the single sided swingarm of the 1100 model whilst keeping the pricing attractive.
Reports suggest that Ducati is disappointed with the level of Monster 1100 sales. In part this may be due to internal competition as some riders move up to the Streetfighter which is $3,000 more in the USA. The Streetfighter essentially replaced the old Monster S4Rs.
The 796 engine was first unveiled on the Hypermotard 796 at the EICMA Show last year. Although the 796 engine makes just one solitary more horsepower than the 696, the engine is much torquier, with 10% more peak torque coming in lower in the range. The price is likely to be the same as the Hyper 796 at USD $9,995.
The new model will offer a more sophisticated machine than the 696 which is firmly aimed at new riders in a similar way to the older S2R 800cc Monster of old. Presumably for next year the 1100 Monster will receive the lighter, more powerful EVO engine as seen in the Hypermotard 1100EVO.

IF the Monster 1100 wasn’t so blasted expensive maybe it would be selling better. Nice to see that ABS will be an option on the 796.
