Leon Haslam (Suzuki Alstare) took provisional pole with a 1’43.476 lap in the opening Qualifying practice session for Round 2 of the World Superbike Championship at Portimao, Portugal. Ducati Xerox rider Michel Fabrizio was second in the rankings ahead of Phillip Island race winner Carlos Checa (Ducati Althea) in third. James Toseland had been fastest in the opening practice session on his Yamaha but ended this session in 5th.
