I thought it would be fun to bring back a couple of articles from earlier in the year that were popular and/or generated significant debate. After coming across an article on Visordown on ‘How the 1098 Saved Ducati’, I decided to write a longer and more in-depth article on more or less the same subject but from the other direction. That was ‘How the 999 Nearly Killed Ducati’ came to life.
No matter what you personally think about the styling, the 999 was Ducati’s first commercial failure in its critical Superbike range. Sales were appalling and the company was plunged into a loss in 2005 and 2006. It took the launch of the 1098 to put the books back into the black. The debate on whether the 999 is a beauty or a beast continues unabated. A thread on Ducati.ms has been viewed more than 12,000 times with over 350 comments.
