Ducati hardly paused for breath following the 2009 Milan EICMA show and is today launching the Hypermotard 1100 EVO & SP to the press at a remote circuit in Sardinia, Italy. The new model promises more power (up 5bhp to 100) and less weight (down 14lb (7kg) to 179lb (172kg). How does it perform on track?
Visordown and Motorcycle News are already reporting positive reports on the new model ahead of riding the trick SP model. Comments center around the lower weight and increased power with negative sentiment poured out only for lack of ground clearance on the track and the street oriented Pirellis fitted as standard.
The Evo feels light, very light, when you rock it from side-to-side at a standstill. It also feels small, nimble, taut and rather sexy. A bit like Kate Moss, just without the traces of white powder over the front end.
The new motor is a grunty, urgent beast…On track the Evo’s a cracking bit of kit, let down only by a lack of ground clearance (memories of Ducati’s Monster come flooding back) and the road-orientated Pirelli Diablo tyres.
“The brakes were brilliant before, but now, with less weight to haul up, they’re outstanding. “The Ducati Hypermotard was always good fun but now, thanks to the extra power and reduced weight, it’s more fun than ever. “My only slight complain is, on track, a slight lack of ground clearance.
