Mladin Does it with a Whimper
Mat Mladin wrapped up his 7th and last AMA Superbike win with a 2nd and 9th in the two races this weekend. Josh Hayes won both races for Yamaha and Larry Pegram finished 12th and 4th.
It was Hayes weekend winning the first race by 10 seconds from Mladin and 6 seconds in the 2nd race. Larry Pegram ran off the track twice in the first race but improved on his result in the second to finish just off the podium.
However the weekend was really about Mat and the relatively lackluster way he wrapped up the championship after announcing his impending retirement just shows how much he has become disillusioned with the DMG series. I had been hoping he would finish the season blowing everyone away but now fear he is done and unlikely to even contest the remaining two races in the 2009 series. Time will tell but the portent from the post race press conference is not good.
Q: Do you consider this retiring, going out on your terms?
Mladin: “I won the championship and as much as you’d like to keep winning races and try to go out with a bang and all the rest of it that, I guess, would be the fairy tale, as I’ve said before, the way I’ve conducted myself in the past, I’ve brought a lot to it, a lot of focus and determination and these days it’s hard to bring. You’re not going to win lots of races if mentally you’re not in it, and your heart’s not in it 100%. I’ve had my day and it’s time for someone else. “
Q: You’ve won the championship now and you’ve got two races left. Will you be able to bring it those last two races?
Mladin: “I don’t know, I’ll tell you in couple of weeks.”

The final round of the series is at New Jersey Motorsports Park on September 4-6th.
