Troy Bayliss only 0.2 Second off the Pace in a V8 Supercar
In June, Troy Bayliss tested a V8 Supercar as raced in the Australia national championship series of the same name. At the time ducatinewstoday reported how Bayliss enjoyed the event and how the team were impressed with his control and precision but not that he was just 2/10ths of second slower than a 3 time Australian V8 Supercar champion.
Now it has been revealed on the official Ducati blog (English translation) that Bayliss in fact lapped just 0.2 seconds slower than Craig Lowndes in the Vodafone Ford at Queensland Raceway in Australia.
I’ve also finally had the chance to test for the Australian V8 Supercar championship. I completed a “driver evaluation day”, like an official test day, with the Vodafone team who currently lead the Supercar championship. It was great, I span only once during the day and clocked up about 80 laps, finishing the day with a time just two tenths off the pace of the team’s official driver. When I made my first exit in the morning it was hard to keep the smile off my face because I’ve always been a huge fan of the championship, like most Australian guys, but then once I got into it, it was just like being back “in the office”, and felt like I was back in the Ducati garage with my engineer, working to improve my technique and lap times.
Bayliss seems to be building towards participation in some of the endurance rounds of the championship later in the year when multiple drivers per car are utilized.
My overall goal is to be able to drive in some Supercar enduro events such as the race at Phillip Island or the famous one at Bathurst circuit. Time will tell but it seems to be heading in the right direction and there is more than one team that may have an opportunity for me so we will see…
