Lorenzo Sticks with Yamaha for 2010

n502176 lorenzo02 thumb.02.original Lorenzo Sticks with Yamaha for 2010After intense speculations that Jorge Lorenzo was poised to announce a switch to Ducati for 2010, Yamaha today announced that the Spaniard has signed a 1 year contract extension for 2010 that will see him remain Valentino Rossi’s team-mate.

This site has argued strongly that Ducati should sign Lorenzo due to the uncertain nature of Casey Stoner’s illness and the lack of competitiveness of Nicky Hayden on the Ducati so far this season. However clearly Jorge was unprepared to take a risk and move away from currently the best racing motorcycle in the world, the Yamaha M1.

Lorenzo said: “I am very happy! Today is a good day because I have decided to remain with the Yamaha Factory Team in 2010. It was a very important decision and that’s why I have had to take the last few weeks to make it, but I think that this is the best decision for me in this moment. I want to thank Yamaha because they have always done everything that they have promised, and I especially would like to say thank you to Lin Jarvis and Masao Furusawa.”

Lin Jarvis, Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing, said “We are obviously delighted that Jorge has decided to stay at Yamaha for the next season and we hope that he will remain at Yamaha for many years to come. Jorge has shown his talent, his ability to learn and to compete at the highest level with many excellent performances in 2008 and 2009.

With Jorge settled for 2010 the remaining moves can now play out. Ducati must exercise it’s option on Nicky Hayden by September 1st and is now likely to do so.
