Can Fabrizio End Spies Superpole Streak Today?
Surprising no-one, Ben Spies was the fastest by the end of the first free practice session at Misano yesterday. What was a surprise was that in the 2 qualifying sessions held since it was Michel Fabrizio on the factory Xerox Ducati who has set the pace. Can he break Spies record qualifying run?
Round 8 of the championship is critical since it is the beginning of the second half of the season which ended with a double win for Spies and the worst results of his season so far for championship leader Haga.
Misano is a circuit with some history. Infamous for ending Wayne Rainey’s career after his paralyzing crash at turn one the circuit reversed direction literally to make it safer. This resulted in the 3, ever increasing speed left handers becoming 3, ever decreasing speed right handers that are a lot less exciting. The late great Barry Sheene labeled the circuit as “Mickey Mouse”.
When Superpole is run this afternoon we will see whether Spies will dig deep once again on qualifiers and make it 8 poles in a row or whether Fabrizio will continue his great form run since his inaugural victory in Monza. With the top 19 riders all circulating within a second the race could be close. We will all find out soon enough.
