Valentino Rossi followed up his stunning last lap victory in Barcelona with a boring but convincing victory over his younger team mate, Jorge Lorenzo, in Round 7 of the MotoGP Championship at Assen to win his 100th GP and re-assert himself at the head of the championship. Casey Stoner still looking ill finished a distant 3rd whilst Colin Edwards took 4th at a circuit he loves. James Toseland finished an opportunistic 6th after last lap shenanigans saw Mika Kallio crash whilst Nicky Hayden finished 9th.

Rossi celebrated his 100th win by unraveling a backdrop and posing for a classic photo with antique cameras, the fun loving crowd favorite never one to forget to put on a show for his fans both on and off the bike.

Jorge Lorenzo was forced to settle for second and although closed to within 1.6 seconds at times never really looked like a convincing challenger for the win. Casey Stoner was 3rd, the Australian still seemingly suffering from whatever caused to almost collapse in exhaustion following last week’s race in Barcelona.

Steady Eddie, Colin Edwards equaled his best result of the year with fourth place, with Chris Vermuelen 5th on the Suzuki ahead of a stream of riders battling for 6th. James Toseland ultimately prevailed after leading the bunch earlier in the race but making the most on the last lap when riders ran off the track.

Mika Kallio crashed out of 6th place on the last lap following a strong ride where he bested factory rider Nicky Hayden who had been as high as 8th faded to 11th but ultimately finished 9th after taking advantage of the last lap chaos ahead of him..

Both Repsol Honda riders Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso crashed out in separate incidents at the same turn whilst Toni ElĂas was penalised twenty seconds for using the run-off area illegally on the final lap.

The next race is Laguna Seca in the USA on July 5th.
