Casey Stoner prevailed in another race complicated by rain that led to all the riders switching from wet to dry rubber during the race. Stoner and the Ducati made the most of it to win from Yamaha teammates, Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi after Loris Capirossi couldn’t keep the underpowered Suzuki at the front as the laps unwound.

Lorenzo was delighted with 2nd place after he slid off on the sighting lap before proceedings even got underway. Nicky Hayden struggled once again in 12th, the consolation of beating Mika Kallio overshadowed by being beaten by Italian rookie Niccolo Canepa who had a great finish in 9th after finally racing at a track he knows well.

It was a shame for Dovizioso to miss out on the rostrum on the last lap once again, having held the race lead early on, on wet tyres. Likewise, his compatriot Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki) was leading at one stage – later in the race – but he fell away in the final laps to finish fifth.

Stoner now leads the World Championship standings by 4 points from Lorenzo. Reigning Champion Rossi is a further 5 points behind. The next round of the MotoGP Championship is Catalunya on June 14th.
