I think progress is inevitable and the monocoque frame concept would be accepted on the superbike model range. I wouldn't want to give up the desmo though!

I respectfully disagree about the trellis not being beautiful, I think it's a simple and elegant solution to a complicated problem and gives the bikes a crafted appearance.

That said, time does move on.

Now how many of you are going to be okay with eschewing desmo valves for electro-magnetic ones?

While anyone with an eye for good design and the heart of a mechanic has to love the loudly red trellis peeping from beneath the tank, using the engine as a stressed frame member is a natural decision for any company with the emphasis on weight reduction and handling that attracted me to Ducati in the first place. The weight savings and structural rigidity possible in such a design - without all the welding - has to appeal to their engineers. I would not be surprised if we saw first this in the 'superbike' family, which is shrouded in enough plastic that you wouldn't even know it unless you work on your own bike, while I would expect the Monster, Sport 1000, and so forth to retain the trellis, at least for quite a while. A steel trellis, after all, is not inherently beautiful, but it's become a signature because they pulled it of so well. I'd expect the same results no matter what they started with. and I personally can't wait to see what Ducati's designers come out with in a naked bike based around this. I also would like a greater than 175 mile range. ;)

Progress, in my opinion. The trellis frame has served them well, and has proved to be a great design. But if they get that monocoque carbon fibre frame to work, and release it on their superbike range... who'd say no to that?
