Ducati Supermono Testastretta Now Available
ducatinewstoday makes no secret of it’s love for the very rare mid nineties, Ducati Supermono and now it seems like passionate, expert, Alistair Wager is going one further than Ducati ever did by building and offering for sale a road legal model updated with the latest Ducati technologies.
Many fans hoped Ducat would follow up the breathtakingly beautiful, fast and exotic Ducati Supermono, with a road machine loosely based on the 122kg (269lb), 81 bhp doppia bielletta or ‘double con-rod’ single cylinder racer that totally dominated sound of singles racing.
The calls fell on deaf ears, but now Motorcycle Daily.com is reporting that Alistair Wager is planning to produce his own.
Briton Alistair Wager is one of the world’s top experts on the Supermono; he’s personally worked on 20 of the 67 machines that were built (he also managed Ducati’s AMA Superbike racing team). He thought Ducati should have produced the bike for street use, as “the Supermono was designed as a race bike that could easily be converted into a streetbike,” according to Supermono designer Pierre Terblanche. “Unfortunately nothing ever came of it.” So he set to building a street-going replica, the Supermono Strada.

The most obvious cosmetic changes are some very dubious looking twin headlights and the placement of the exhaust on the right hand side to provide more clearance (pictured above). The racer originally had the exhaust exiting on the left (pictured below).

The updated machine features a replica chassis, a 1000SS swingarm and many parts upgrades from the 999R including the narrow, testastretta head and the 104mm bore. The resulting 595cc engine develops a claimed 88 bhp at the crankshaft. Weight is claimed to be just 133kg (294lb) and will be offered for 35,000 UK pounds (about $52,000). Considering that original Supermono racers still sell for upwards of $80,000 this doesn’t seem too unreasonable. Where do I sign?
