Feeling Flush? Cagiva 500GP Racer 4 Sale
Okay it’s not quite a Ducati, but the achingly beautiful Cagiva grandprix racers of the 1990′s are from a time when Ducati was owned by Cagiva. So it’s close! The only credible alternative to Japanese dominance, this 500cc V4 two-stroke was raced by temperamental genius racer John Kocinski in the 1993 season and is now for sale in Europe.
After their debut win in 1992 with Eddie Lawson at the controls, the mercurial John Kocinski joined the factory Cagiva team for the 1993 season after falling out with Suzuki and their ill-fated 250cc racer. Kocinski won on this bike at the US GP, held at Laguna Seca. The following year he won again and finished 3rd in the World Championship (Australian, Mick Doohan won).
More important, almost, than the fact the bike was competitive was the contrast of the beautiful, blood red, Italian racer to the Japanese machines of the time. This machine is from a time when the rider’s skill was the only form of traction control available and it took amazing talent to race the 500cc, 130kg (286lb), 180 bhp machines to their limit where the rider was just a small error away from a vicious high side.
This particular machine, as raced by Kocinski, is for sale in Europe on classic-Motorbikes.com for 150,000 Euros ($200,000). It has been used during demonstration rides at historical meetings and is available right now. Oh and the price, Ahem, is available upon request. You know the story, if you need to ask, you can’t afford it. You and me both!!
