Environmentally Conscious? Buy a Ducati
When gas prices hit $4 last year, there was a big rush in the USA away from gas guzzling SUV’s to smaller, more fuel efficient cars like, well the Honda Fit. Not many considered it, but there was another way to improve gas mileage on the commute whilst still affording some fun in the weekends? What you ask. A motorcycle. And why not make it a Ducati. Popular Mechanics decided to compare a Ducati Hypermotard S with a Honda Fit Sport to see how they compared for fun, practicality and fuel efficiency.
It is hardly surprising that the Ducati didn’t fare too well against the cage during the morning commute.
The tremendous torque of the 1078 cc L-twin rolls on instantly. And with short gearing, we burst through holes in traffic. The downside to these thrills is comfort—we were saddle-sore in less than 100 miles. And there’s no windscreen. Once clear of traffic—at 70 mph—the wind buffeting is fierce and tiring.
For weekend fun, the Ducati predictably blew the car away in terms of outright performance.
Our hired gun, professional test rider Matthias Jezek, hustled the Hypermotard to 60 mph more than 6 seconds quicker than we could manage in the Honda. In fact, the Ducati reaches 90 mph before the Honda even gets to 60 mph
However the car was no slouch especially downhill. Downhill, like off a cliff? How would you feel being given the hurry up on a twisty road by a Honda FIT!!! In the end the bike prevailed as you might expect based on performance, price and fuel efficiency.
The endgame comes down to fuel efficiency and price. Over our test route, the Honda returned a solid 29.8 mpg. But the high-strung, Italian-bred superbike delivered an incredible 48.9 mpg and cost about $1900 less. That’s the tipping point.
Winner – Ducati. So the next time you feel the need to be socially responsible, why not head to your local dealer and buy a Ducati, for the good of the global community, naturally.
