Superbike Qualifying 2 – Rea Vaults to the Top

b jonathan rea v12 Superbike Qualifying 2   Rea Vaults to the TopEnglish rider Jonathan Rea took provisional pole position from Jakob Smrz after the conclusion of the second qualifying session of Round 1 of the 2009 World Superbike Championship season at Phillip Island today. Rea posted a best time of 1’32.161. Max Biaggi brought the new Aprilia RSV4 into 2nd place with Smrz just pipping factory Ducati rider, Noriyuki Haga on his customer bike. Troy Corser made it 4 different manufacturers in the first 5 spots after he deftly catapulted his BMW from 20th to 5th place in the dying moments of the session.

All of the fastest 20 riders who will now move forward to the Superpole sessions were within 1 second of the provisional pole time.

The action will continue this afternoon Australian time as the revised Superpole format runs for the first time involving 3, 12 minute qualifying sessions. The top 20 riders will run in the first session. At the end of that time the 16 fastest will continue in a second session before the fastest 8 will compete in a final session to determine the front 2 rows of the grid.
