Smrz Knocks Haga off the Top in Qualifying
Czech republic Rider, Jakob Smrz stopped the clock with the fastest time on his Ducati 1098R around the 4.4km Phillip Island circuit after the conclusion of the first qualifying session of the 2009 World Superbike Championship season. Smrz just got in his fastest lap as the checkered flag was shown, knocking Ducati’s Noriyuki Haga from the top spot.
Smrz posted a best time of 1’32.312. 5 riders went faster than the best time posted by Ben Spies in the first free practice session. Spies was 8th fastest. The field was tightly grouped with just 1 second separating the top 15 riders. The diversity and competitiveness of the field was highlighted by the fact that 5 manufacturers were represented in the top 8 times.
The action continues Saturday with more qualifying including the first run of the revised Superpole format for determining grid order.
