Riders like the New Superpole format
World Superbike racers seemed to enjoy their first try at the revised Superpole system for World Superbike racing in 2009 during official testing in Portugal.
The system is based on 3 sessions of 12 minutes each. The top 20 riders are first cut down to 16 and then to a final 8 where their lap times in the last session determines the first two rows of the grid.
Shane Byrne: “I like the new Superpole formula. We had something similar in BSB, in the last four races of the season, and it was good fun. It also looks better on TV than the one before and I’m sure the fans in the circuit will like it more”.
In Portugal, with changeable weather conditions that made life difficult, the ‘virtual’ Superpole went to Shane Byrne (Sterilgarda Ducati) with a time of 1’43″874, ahead of Max Neukirchner (Suzuki Alstare) in 1’43″965
The riders might like it but I’m not sure I do. There was always something exciting about a solo, one lap dash. Plus it was great to be able to hear each bike’s sound in its full glory howling or booming around the track.
